Decision support for intermodal transportation

Short description

This project is dedicated to the developement of decision support approaches in transportation planning of distribution networks. Methods should bedeveloped that allow managers of large-scaled companies to find an optimal combination of transport services such that a set of customers can be supplied by a set of production sites. Here, the term "transport services" subsumes types of organization for rail, road and water transports. By combining different transport services intermodal transport chains are creates which can gain cost advantages compared with unimodal transports due to freight consolidation effects. A prerequisite is the coordination / synchronization of freight flows in time and space. Therefore, the project focusses on the modelling of consolidation and synchronization effects, which in turn eases the planning of intermodal transport chains. The optimal mix of transport service may contain intermodal as well as unimodal transports. Its structure depends on the costs of the considered services as well as structural restrictions. Hence, a central point in this project is to investigate the effects of these parameters on the optimal mix of transport services.
