Hints for Bachelor thesis

Every year the evaluation office centrally assigns students based on their preferences to the chairs of the faculty for seminars and bachelor thesis. You must actively take part in the procedure. The procedure typically starts every year in January or February. You should take part in the procedure in your 3rd term. It is not possible to take part in the chairs seminars' or writing your thesis at our chair without being assigned by the central assignment procedure.

A prerequisite for writing your bachelor thesis is to have successively participated in the bachelor seminar. Please check additional prerequisites in your study regulations.

The topic of the bachelor thesis can extend the topic of your seminar paper (provided the seminar topic fits to the chair's profile). But also other topics of your interest are possible. Additionally, it is also possible to write a thesis in cooperation with a company about a topic faced in practice (provided the topic fits the chair's competences).

The final decision about the thesis' topic is made by Prof. Bierwirth in any case. For discussing your ideas about potential topics of your thesis, you can make an appointment with Prof. Bierwirth or an research assistant by contacting our secretary, Nicole Wolfig (). For consultations it is advisable in any case to prepare answers to the following questions:

  • What is/are the central research question(s)?
  • Which are the necessary components/prerequisites to answer this/these question(s)?
  • In which way the research question(s) should be answered? (structure of the thesis)

Once the topic of your thesis has been narrowed down sufficiently, you can officially register for the module "bachelor thesis" in the evaluation office. Note that the concrete title of your thesis is defined by Prof. Bierwirth and submitted to you officially by the examination office along with a notice of the thesis' submission deadline. You are responsible for making appointments with your advisor if you are in need for a consultation. There are no restrictions or regulations w.r.t. time, duration, or frequencies of consultations. Please note that consultations are intended to clarify well-specified problems in writing your thesis. Please do not expect that these problems are solved by your advisor. Consultations should guide you in finding your own way to find a solution to your problem. In general, follow the principle guidelines for writing seminar papers mentioned above.

The deadline for submitting your finished thesis to the evaluation office is 8 weeks after you officially registered to the module "bachelor thesis" and received your official thesis topic. Your thesis should not have more than 30 pages. Submit 3 printed and cased versions of your thesis in the evaluation office before the deadline expires. Along with the printed versions of your thesis, a CD containing the PDF file of your thesis and used data (if any) has to be submitted to the evaluation office.

Note:
Once you have participated in the central assignment procedure for bachelor seminars and theses and received your assignment to a chair(s), you can start your thesis until the end of year for which the assignment is made.

An example: If the central assignment procedure assigns the students for the terms WS20/21 and SS21, you can start your bachelor thesis at the designated chair until the end of December of 2021. If you miss this deadline, you have to participate in the central assignment procedure again.

Hints for Master thesis

Before you can start your master thesis at the chair of Production & Logistics you need at least 60 Credits in your master program.
To find a topic for your master thesis, you should think about your special fields of interest within the Production & Logistics universe. The master thesis should prove that you are able to investigate (and solve) an issue in production or logistics with scientific methods. The contents of the courses offered by the chair is a starting point to find interesting issues.  Additionally, it is also possible to write a thesis in cooperation with a company about a topic faced in practice (provided the topic fits the chair's competences). For discussing your ideas about potential topic of your thesis, you can make an appointment with an research assistant. The final decision about the thesis' topic is made by Prof. Bierwirth in any case. To make an appointment with Prof. Bierwirth, please contact our secretary, Nicole Wolfig (). For appointsments with the research assistants, please send an email directly.
For consultations it is advisable in any case to prepare answers to the following questions:

  • What is/are the central research question(s)?
  • Which are the necessary components/prerequisites to answer this/these question(s)?
  • In which way the research question(s) should be answered? (structure of the thesis?

Once the topic of your thesis is approved, you can officially register for the module "master thesis" in the evaluation office. Before the registration process can be finished, the second examiner has to be assigned. You can make suggestions for this appointment, otherwise the chair will try to find the second examiner.

Once the registration process is successfully finished, you have 23 weeks to complete the master thesis. During this time you have to participate in the chair's master colloquium which is a regular course during each term. The colloquium takes place about 3-5 times per term. You are expected to present your work in a 25-minute talk.
Your thesis should not have more than 50 pages. Submit 3 printed and cased versions of your thesis in the evaluation office before the deadline expires. Along with the printed versions of your thesis, a CD containing the PDF file of your thesis and used data (if any) has to be submitted to the evaluation office.
